Iquitos
is located in the midst of the great Amazon
|
| plain,
almost entirely surrounded by three ocher- |
|
|
color
rivers: the Nanay, the Itaya and the Amazonas -the longest river
with the greatest flow in the world. Iquitos is connected with
the outside world only by air or river. It is the departure
point to the fascinating diversity of the jungle flora and fauna
and the mysterious beauty of the forests.
Plaza de Armas: the main square is the place where everybody
goes to enjoy the cool breezes and to meet in the evenings.
The major attraction is the Casa de Hierro (Iron House) designed
by Eiffel and bought by Anselmo del Aguila in 1897. |

The tourist week of Iquitos is celebrated on the |

occasion. Dances, parade of native bands, folk-art fair,
passacaglias, and photographic contest attract many visitors. |

| Malecon Tarapaca: this is a
promenade on the Amazon river front lined by some mansions
built during the rubber boom. Interesting view of the
river and the port of Belen. Fortunately, the promenade
is at present being remodeled and embellished. |

Organized tourism in Iquitos has been considerably
developed in recent years. Excursions, and a variety of Jungle
trips may be arranged by companies with private transport
-outboard motorboats and also hydroplanes. They offer overnight
stays at lodges built in the style of the area and located
deep in the jungle surrounded by exuberant Amazon flora and
